Photojournalism

Course Description: This course explores Web Design, Graphic Design, Hardware, and Software associated with Interactive Media. Students will develop skills using such software as: Dreamweaver ® PhotoShop ® , Flash ® in the PC and Macintosh ® platforms. Students will develop problem solving and critical thinking skills needed for today and tomorrow.

Course Description: This course explores Digital Photography and its uses in Journalism as well as the Hardware, and Software associated with Digital Photography. Students will develop design skills and techniques using digital cameras and software which may include: Adobe PhotoShop ® in the Windows ® environment . Students will develop problem solving and critical thinking skills needed for today and tomorrow.

About the Instructor : Ron Ross is a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Education (Comprehensive). Mr. Ross began teaching public high school in 1982. From 1984-1986 Mr. Ross taught grades 7-12 in the Catholic school system before teaching 3 years at the Federal Correctional Institute in Ashland. For 10½ years Mr. Ross worked as an executive in an architectural interior design firm. He has many years experience in the use of technology and of software. Most recently, Mr. Ross taught College Tech Prep at South Point High School from 2001-Present.

 

Course of Study

Students will explore the following competencies as prescribed for by the Ohio Department of Education:

01. Identify photographic equipment

01. Differentiate between various camera formats (i.e., traditional, digital)

02. Select appropriate camera format for given situation

03. Identify film for different light sources

02. Demonstrate knowledge of photographic language

01. Demonstrate knowledge of the role played by the following photographic elements: composition's formal qualities, scale, use of space, use of light

02. Demonstrate knowledge of how the meaning of a photograph is affected by composition, formal qualities, scale, use of space, and use of light

03. Identify the use and meaning of symbolism and of metaphor in given photographs

04. Set up photo shoots

01. Define parameters of photo shoot according to layout

02. Gather materials and equipment needed for photo shoot

03. Style subject matter according to layout

10. Digital Media Design/Basic Computers

02. Create visual design guidelines

01. Integrate paint illustration program techniques with digital photography imagery

02. Perform basic layout functions using word-processing software

05. Perform basic layout functions using imaging software

09. Define color-editing capabilities (i.e., RGB, CMYK, PANTONE, TRUMATCH, WEB COLOR)

03. Enhance images

01. Identify image file formats

02. Manipulate font

03. Convert file formats

04. Manipulate contrast

05. Crop images

06. Scale images

07. Adjust images using various filtration methods

09. Adjust images using selection tools

10. Adjust images using painting and editing tools
