Scholarship Information

Established in 2002, the Harold W. Shafer Memorial Scholarship provides financial assistance for deserving Ironton High School students who wish to pursue an advanced degree in Education from Ohio University Southern Campus. Each year, one student will be selected to receive a $5,000 scholarship, to be paid over four years of enrollment.

The Shafer family has established this memorial scholarship to assist those Ironton High School students who have dreams and focused goals in the field of education at Ohio University Southern and who will continue on the legacy of Harold Wesley Shafer, the teacher.

Scholarship Criteria

To be eligible for the Harold W. Shafer Memorial Scholarship a student must:

  • Graduate from Ironton High School with a minimum 3.0 GPA.

  • Graduate in top18 percent of his or her class.

  • Earn a minimum score of 24 on the ACT or a minimum score of 1100 on the SAT.

  • Pursue an education degree from Ohio University Southern Campus.

  • Obtain a recommendation from one of his or her former instructors at Ironton High School.

Scholarship Details

Each award is renewable for up to 12 quarters undergraduate study pending the recipient making satisfactory progress towards graduation. The recipients must be "full time" as defined by Ohio University and maintain a 3.0 GPA. The recipients can take no break in enrollment longer than one quarter in one year.

Applications must be made annually through the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarship by the application deadline date. The scholarship shall be used toward tuition, textbooks, and other educationally-related expenses. Selection Process

When all scholarship applications have been received, the Ohio University Southern Campus Scholarship Selection Committee will begin the initial review process, advising the Harold W. Shafer Memorial Scholarship family selection committee as to who the eligible applicants are. The family selection committee will review the list and provide a recommendation of recipients to the OUSC Scholarship Selection Committee. Final selection of recipients will be made by the Scholarship Selection Committee.
