Although Ironton City Schools has included music in their curriculum since the district was founded in 1849, the first symphonic and marching bands were not established until 1927. The first band was founded by music teacher Harry F. Glore, who received his music education degree from the elite University of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. That first group consisted of just 13 members.

Dubbed "The Million Dollar Band" by radio broadcaster Clint McElroy, Sr. in 1955, today's Ironton Band includes some 120 students and performs at more than 40 events, including football games, home basketball games, numerous community parades and events--including the Ironton-Lawrence County Memorial Day Parade--and hosts the annual premier marching band contest, The Buckeye Classic.
