Gentleman's Academy

Gentlemen’s Academy Returns to IES!

The Gentlemen's Academy is an after-school program for 4th & 5th grade boys.  The boys complete training in the principles of being a gentleman.  They learn 20 rules, including ideas that focus on placing others before themselves, such as being punctual, offering seats, being prepared, and showing concern for others. By the end of the program, our young gentleman can change oil in a car, cook a meal, sew a button, iron a shirt, respectfully honor the flag, work as a team to complete tasks, work with tools, shake a hand like a man, and tie a necktie.  The program ends with a lunch date with local female retirees at a restaurant where the boys practice the ways of being a gentleman.

For the second year, boys at Ironton Elementary are engaging in the art of being a gentleman—thinking of others before yourself. At the first session, the aspiring gentlemen learned: how to quickly calculate a tip, the practices of a quality handshake, how to iron, and learned the first five principles from the Gentlemen’s Academy “Twenty Rules of Being a Gentleman.” Each boy created their own code name.

To end the session, the Academy was split into four teams, using map skills, clue solving, radios, and teamwork to complete checkpoints and drop-off tasks. One team returned to base with the golden compass, a sign of victory and teamwork!
