The Ironton High School Assistant Principal

The Ironton City District may have as one of its administrators, an Assistant Principal at the Ironton High School. The Assistant Principal shall be employed by the Ironton City Board of Education, upon the recommendation of the Ironton City Superintendent of Schools, under a contractual agreement with the Ironton City Board of Education, at an annual salary as established by this Board of Education.

The Assistant Principal shall be a person of considerable academic and professional stature, and experienced in secondary education. He/She shall also be a person who has the qualities of leadership, yet one who can work amicably and well in the capacity and position of an assistant. He/She shall be a person of unquestionable character, and an individual who can earn the respect of both the students and staff.

The Assistant Principal shall be fully certified for this position, as is required by the Ohio Department of Education, Department of Certification. This Board of Education considers the local legal requirements to be the possession of the High School Principal’s Certificate, and the minimum of three (3) years as a teacher and/or administrator of a secondary school.

The Ironton City Superintendent of Schools shall put into writing, in the accompanying Administrative Rules and Regulations, the duties of the Assistant Principal of Ironton High School.

Employment

The Assistant Principal at Ironton High School shall work the school calendar year (183) each year of employment, plus ten (10) additional days; five (5) days before school opens in the fall, and five (5) days after school closes in the spring, making a total of 193 working days each calendar year.

Sick Leave and Other

The Ironton High School Assistant Principal shall be entitled to sick leave and other leave as granted by State laws, and by Ironton City Board of Education Policies 4151.1-2 and 4151.7.

Administrative Rules and Regulations 2220

The Assistant Principal at Ironton High School

The Assistant Principal at Ironton High School shall:

1. Report directly to and be responsible to the Principal of Ironton High School in all matters pertaining to the operations of the high school (unless otherwise stipulated in Board Policies and/or Administrative Rules and Regulations);

2. Serve as the chief administrative officer (Principal) of I.H.S. in the absence of the Principal.

3. Assist the Principal in preparing and executing a total school program for his school: both curricular and extracurricular.

4. Visit classrooms at Ironton High School while classes are in session; evaluate personnel; and report findings, along with his/her recommendations, to the Principal;

5. Be responsible for, under the direction of the Principal, the discipline of the students, with the authority to make policy; issue rules and guidelines for student violations (for detention, paddling, etc.); and to make decisions and judgments as necessary to get the job done;

6. Assist, at the direction of, and under the supervision of the Assistant Superintendent, in cooperation with the Head Cook – Unit Manager, in making provisions for the day-to-day operations of the lunchroom-cafeteria at I.H.S.; and to assist in policy formulation for and in the maintenance of student discipline therein;

7. Be in direct charge of all custodians at high school complex, being responsible to and working under the overall supervision of the Assistant Superintendent;

8. Share, with the Principal, in an equitable manner, the supervision of extracurricular, after-school activities and events such as athletic contests, concerts, plays, and the like, especially where the public is involved.

9. Arrive at school before faculty and students are to report each morning and assist faculty in maintaining order in the hallways; do likewise between classes during the day; and remain in the school to see to it that students leave the building in good order;

10. Consult with both teacher and student on difficult and serious matters related to classroom conflicts between these parties; be a "problem solver";

11. Be responsible for student attendance at I.H.S. and take such steps as are necessary to keep educable students in school;

12. Counsel the wayward, the misguided, and the unmotivated student, on a one-to-one basis, to get this student on a constructive path toward success – at something;

13. Stress the fact to all teachers and students that academic excellence is the first priority, the ultimate aim and objective, of Ironton High School;

14. Work cooperatively and closely with the Principal and the faculty and support personnel in the common purpose of making Ironton High School an educational institution second to none, in achievements and successes in all fields of endeavor;

15. Make it a habit to compliment and recognize teachers and other staff members who are doing a good job, and assist in trying to improve teachers and other staff members who are doing a poor job;

16. Seek out, recognize, and congratulate high school students who make a significant contribution to Ironton High School, and who, by their good work in any school activity or endeavor, "Do the School Proud";

17. Keep the Principal informed on all school matters unknown to him/her, but which should be known and brought to the principal’s attention;

18. Suggest and offer to the Principal any new and/or different ideas on secondary curriculum, methods, techniques, procedures, and organization which he (the Assistant Principal), believes would improve the Ironton High School;

19. Work in harmony and cooperation with the Principal on positive and constructive programs and endeavors that would tend to improve the prestige of Ironton High School as a top-drawer educational institution;

20. Do any reasonable job or task (not specifically mentioned herein) but which would be attendant to the position, and/or assigned by the Principal and/or other authorized Administrator.
