BOARD POLICY 3740

Smoke Free Environment

Safety, health and economic concerns are the principal factors motivating the Ironton City Board of Education to adopt smoking restrictions or bans.

Protection from fire and high accident rates among smokers attributed to preoccupation and consequent inattention to the job is one reason for concern.

Detrimental health effects are well-documented according to research by the federal office on smoking and health and many independents medical authorities. Smoking accounts for more than one of every six deaths. In the U.S., smokers have a 1,000 percent greater risk than non-smokers of dying of lung cancer.

Health care and productivity losses attributable to smoking are the main contributors to economic losses.

1. The Superintendent and building principals shall designate the location where employees will be permitted to smoke.

2. No pupil of the Ironton City School District shall smoke or use tobacco or possess any substance containing tobacco in any area under the control of the district or at any activity supervised by any school within the district.

3. The Superintendent shall designate those areas in which the public may smoke on school property.
