Sick Leave

 

                Sick leave regulations for the employee of the Ironton City School District shall be as follows:

 

(1)      All regular employees and teachers of the Ironton City Schools shall be granted sick leave of one and  

        one-fourth (1 ¼) days of each completed calendar month of service in each calendar year.   

         (Fifteen (15) days per year)

 

(2)      In conformity with O.R.C. Section 3319.144 and 3319.08, five (5) days of this anticipated sick leave

        shall be available as of the first month of the school year.  These five (5) days shall be a part, and is   

        not construed to be in excess of, the total sick leave accumulated at the rate of one and one-fourth

       (1 ¼) days for each completed calendar month.

 

(3)     Previously accumulated sick leave of an employee who has been separated (except by retirement) from

service in the Ironton City Schools shall be placed under his/her credit upon his/her reemployment.

 

(4)     Any employee who transfers from another Ohio school district or public agency to the Ironton City School System shall be credited with the unused balance of his/her sick leave accumulated under O.R.C Section 143-29, upon furnishing a satisfactory documented statement which properly establishes this unused balance.

 

(5)     Unused sick leave shall be cumulative in accordance with bargaining agreements.  Any new employee who transfers from another Ohio school district or public agency into the Ironton City School System shall be credited with unused balance of sick leave accumulated, but not to exceed the maximum allowed each year.

 

(6)     Employees may use accumulated sick leave, upon the approval of the Superintendent of Schools, for absence, due to personal illness or injury which confines the employee to the hospital or to the home.

 

(7) Upon the recommendation of the city health physician and approval by the Superintendent of Schools,     

       employees may use accumulated sick leave for absence due to exposure to contagious disease which    

       may be communicated to other employees.

(8)  In case of absence because of a death in the immediate family of any employee, leave may be granted

      to the employee in accordance with negotiated contract.  Other cases meriting consideration, and

      to covered by written agreements may be submitted to the Superintendent for consideration.

 

(9)     All applications for sick leave pay must be submitted with three (3) days after the employee returns to work.

 

(10)   When sick-leave absence extends beyond one pay period, an application for each pay period (every

         other Friday) must be submitted before pay check can be released.

 

(11)    In the event of absence for a long duration, such as maternity leave, the employee should complete

         applications in advance for the absent time definitely known.

 

(12)   Half-day absence will be recognized with sick leave as follows:

  1. When the employee becomes ill after reporting to duty;
  2. When the employee needs one-half day for dental, medical, or other health related appointment(s);
  3. When the employee attends a funeral, as authorized in No. 8 above; or
  4. When any other half-day absence is authorized under any provision of this sick-leave policy or by Ohio law governing sick leave.
  5. Principals may use full-time, regularly-employed qualified personnel to assume duties of employees on half day if available for such duties or the employee agrees to accept the amount of compensation as set by the Ironton City Board of Education for such services.
  6. One-half day under the provisions of this policy is construed to mean the middle point between the opening and the final bells of the school day.  Nothing less than one-half day’s absence is to be considered. It shall be either a full day or half day.

 

(13)   Employees who do not submit sick leave applications will not be paid until proper forms are

        submitted.

 

(14)   The Board Treasurer is not authorized to make payments for sick leave unless application for sick

        leave payment is approved by the Ironton City Superintendent of Schools.

 

(15)   In case of extended absence, weekly notifications shall be made by the employee to the

        Superintendent of Schools as to the possible date of return to duties.

 

(16)   In order to use accumulated sick leave, notice must be given to the secretary of the Superintendent for  

        the employees in the elementary buildings and the junior high school; and the secretary of the high

        school building, not later than 6:45 a.m. on the day the employee is absent.

 

(17)   Before returning to work after absence, employees shall notify the above-designated secretaries, if  

        possible, the day before they plan to return to work.  In no event shall notification of return be later       

        than 6:45 a.m. on the day of return.

 

(18)   Payment for accumulated sick leave upon retirement shall be made in conformity with

        Board Policy 4236.

 

(19)   A new employee who has no opportunity to accumulate sick leave, may upon request, be advanced a

        maximum of five (5) days in accordance with the Sick Leave Policy in effect, providing the number 

        of days requested may be accumulated by the employee before the succeeding end of the school year.

        Such days will be deducted from the employee’s total accumulation of sick leave at the end of the

        school year.

 

(20)   Any employee who has used all previously accumulated sick leave may, upon request, be advanced a

        maximum of five (5) days in accordance with the Sick Leave Policy in effect, providing the number of  

        days requested may be accumulated by the employee before the end of the school year.  Such days

        will be deducted from the employee’s total accumulation of sick leave at the end of the year.

 

(21)   No sick leave shall be granted or credited to a teacher after his/her retirement or termination of  

        employment.
