BOARD POLICY 4151.7
Personal Leave
Part I – General Statement of Policy
All teaching and non-teaching personnel in the employ of the Ironton City Board of Education will be allowed a maximum of three (3) days of paid leave which are not covered by other types of paid leave, (such as sick leave, bereavement, etc.) during the school year, effective with the beginning of the school year 1980-81.
Each request for such leave shall be made by written application (on forms provided by this school system) with the building principal, who will recommend or not recommend the request, and forward such request form to the Ironton City Superintendent of Schools, for his final approval or disapproval. This request shall be filed, except in emergencies, twenty-four (24) hours before the day of leave requested, in order that a suitable replacement or substitute can be obtained. Principals and other administrative personnel shall make the request for leave directly with the Ironton City Superintendent of Schools. The Superintendent of the Ironton City Schools shall have the right to limit the number of requests on any given day, thus ensuring that the normal operations of the Ironton City School System will not be materially affected by such leave.
A. The employee shall make a written application to his/her principal twenty-four (24) hours in advance. Principals and other administrative personnel shall also make written applications to the Ironton City Superintendent of Schools twenty-four (24) hours in advance of the leave request.
B. The filing of false application by an employee shall be considered by the Board of Education as
grounds for disciplinary action in such form or manner as the Board may deem advisable.
C. If the principal does have reason to question the validity of the reason for which the leave is being
requested, he/she shall then inform the Superintendent of the Ironton City Schools and the employee to determine the validity of the employee’s reason for leave.
D. If the employee has any doubt about the validity of the reason for the leave, or if he/she wishes a
definite answer before the leave, he/she shall discuss the reason with the Ironton City Superintendent of Schools.
E. Personal leave will not normally or usually be granted to any eligible employee during the period of
one day before and one day after the following holidays: Labor Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving Recess, Christmas Vacation, Presidents’ Day, Easter or Spring Vacation, Memorial Day, or any other school holiday or dismissal day. However, the Ironton City Superintendent of Schools shall have the authority to grant personal leave under this provision of this Policy if, in his good judgment, he feels that mitigating circumstances or other consideration warrant and merit the granting of such leave.
F. The three-day (3) leave as listed herein shall not be accumulative from one to another. However, if the total three (3) personal leave days are not used by an employee in an given school year, the three (3) unused personal leave days may be converted into said employee’s accumulated sick leave at the end of that school year. If one, two, or three days of personal leave is/are used by an employee in any school year, no personal days may be converted to accumulated sick leave for that school year.
