BOARD POLICY 4151
Leave of Absence
“Upon the written request of a teacher, or a regular non-teaching school employee, a board of education may grant a leave of absence for a period of not more than two consecutive school years for education , professional, or other purposes, and shall grant a leave where illness or other disability is the reason for the request…” (O.R.C. 3318.13)
“A board of education may not grant a leave unless there is available a satisfactory substitute, nor grant such leaves to more than five percent of the professional staff at any one time….” (O.R.C. 3319.131)
Thus, as indicated in the above excerpts from the Ohio Revised Code, the Ironton City Board of Education may legally grant a leave of absence to a teacher or other employee if the request is legitimate, and if done in compliance with the statues of the State of Ohio. Certain, limited reasons for, or purposes of a leave of absence will be considered by the Ironton City Board of Education. These will include: leave for the employee’s professional improvements; military leave; attendance at professional meetings; illnesses; leave without request (for physical and/or mental disability); and other legitimate reasons or purposes as permitted under Ohio law.
However, to ensure continuity in the educational process, and the uncorrupted education of our students, it shall be the policy of the Ironton City Board of Education to scrutinize very carefully any and all requests for extended or prolonged leaves of absence and to deny them for same unless:
(1) mandated by law; or
(2) the best interest of this School System is served by the approval of such request.
This shall be especially true if the request is made for leave when the school year is then in progress and would ultimately result in interrupting the continuity of the educational process of Ironton students.
