Aides Assigned to Orthopedically Handicapped Classes
The aides assigned to the orthopedically handicapped classes will be regularly employed by the Ironton City Board of Education upon the recommendation of the Ironton City Superintendent of Schools. The intent of the Board in employing these aides is not to replace the teacher or other certified personnel, but rather to assist the teacher in the implementation of his/her program. The aides will supplement, not supplant.
The aides assigned to the orthopedically handicapped class or classes shall be at least 18 years of age, or be a high school graduate over 16 years of age.
The aides assigned to the orthopedically handicapped classrooms, as employed by this Board of Education, shall have all rights, benefits, and legal protection available to other nonteaching employees in this school district. The aides assigned to the orthopedically handicapped classrooms shall be compensated according to a salary or plan as adopted by this Board.
The aide assigned to the orthopedically handicapped class or classes shall at all times while in the performance of his/her duties be under the supervision and direction of a teacher as defined in Section 3309.09 of the Ohio Revised Code.
The aides assigned to the orthopedically handicapped class or classes will be the same as the teacher’s hours in the building in which the aides are working.
The aides assigned to the orthopedically handicapped class or classes shall work 190 days each school year, including authorized legal paid holidays.

Aides Assigned to Orthopedically Handicapped Classes
Duties and Responsibilities
(1) Help the teacher with student instruction.
(1) reading stories;
(2) working with manipulative materials;
(3) directing specific work-play activities;
(4) reinforce skills- (physical, visual, auditory) as presented by the teacher;
(5) follow-up activities for a teacher initiated lesson plan.
(2) Helps the teacher with classroom maintenance.
(1) Management of children dressing and undressing during arrival and dismissal.
(2) Management of children during lavatory breaks; this would include assisting in toileting or changing diapers.
(3) Preparing snacks and supervising the eating of same.
(4) Assisting in securing lunch trays and helping to feed the children.

(3) Help the teacher with routine clerical chores.
(a) The teacher aide may be asked to:
(1) take attendance;
(2) assemble materials to be sent home with students;
(3) help with record keeping;
(4) deliver lunch count.
(b) The teacher aide may be asked to duplicate materials.
(4) Maintain a responsible position in the community regarding his/her work with children.
(a) A teacher aide is responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of any educational experience
observed in the course of duties. That is:
(1) students’ behavior or abilities are not discussed with parents or others by the teacher aide.
(2) students’ personal lives and/or school lives as observed by the teacher aide are not points of discussion.
(b) The teacher aide is a representative of the entire Ironton City School System and participates
whenever possible in the betterment of the school and community.
(1) participates in school/parent affairs,
(2) encourages others to participate in school affairs,
(3) maintains an optimistic attitude toward his/her work and the educational system of which he/she is a part.
(5) Supervision of teacher aides
(a) Classroom aides are supervised by the teacher and principal with whom they work daily.
(b) The Low-incidence Consultant serves as resource person for technical help and in-service training.
(6) Evaluation of teacher aides
(a) the building principal and the classroom teacher to whom the aide is assigned are directly
responsible for evaluating the aide’s performance.
(b) The Low-incidence Consultant will serve as resource person for evaluating teacher aides.
