The Maintenance Foreman

 

                The Ironton City Schools shall have as one of its staff members, a Maintenance Foreman, who shall be employed by the Ironton City Board of Education, upon the recommendation of the Ironton City Superintendent of Schools, under a legal contractual agreement, and paid at an annual salary as set by this Board of Education.  The Maintenance Foreman shall be directly responsible to the City Superintendent of Schools.

 

                The Maintenance Foreman shall be in charge of the overall maintenance (including custodial care) on all buildings, grounds, and fixed equipment which is owned, operated, and/or controlled by the City Board of Education.  The Maintenance Foreman shall be a talented person, knowledgeable and experienced in a number of work areas, trades, crafts, and skills sufficient to enable him to lead the way in the repair, upkeep, and improvement of the aforementioned properties.  The Maintenance Foreman shall recommend to the City Superintendent of Schools a working staff adequate for the maintenance tasks required by his assignment.  It is the responsibility of the Maintenance Foreman and his staff to keep the school buildings and facilities in the Ironton City School District operational, in order that the process of instruction can go on uninterrupted, as possible, in a safe, proper physical environment. The Ironton City Superintendent of Schools shall formulate Administrative Rules and Regulations for the position, enumerating such duties and responsibilities, as deemed appropriate.

 

 

Working Operations

 

                The Maintenance Foreman shall be a full-time employee of this School District, working 260 days each calendar year, including authorized legal holidays and earned vacation.  He/she shall (generally) work a forty-hour week, an eight-hour day, Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily, with thirty minutes off each day for lunch.  However, because of the nature of this position, these hours may differ and may be altered from time to time because of mechanical breakdowns and failures which necessitate his being “called out” to correct same.

 

                The Maintenance Foreman will be required to work on emergency or “snow days”. 

 

Responsibility

 

                The responsibility of this position demands the knowledge and application of skills for the proper installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of all light and heavy equipment and machinery necessary for the functional operation of the mechanical and physical plants of the Ironton City Schools.

 

                The areas of heating, new construction, electrical, plumbing, improvement and repair of existing structures, and supervision of maintenance personnel are to be properly managed and executed in order to provide the high level of standards of school care and maintenance.

 

 

Probation

 

                The Maintenance Foreman shall be initially employed on a 90-day probationary basis and shall be eligible for continued employment upon the satisfactory completion of the probationary period.  Continued employment shall be at the discretion of this Board and the Superintendent of Schools, with due regard to the tenure laws of the State of Ohio.

 

 

Vacations

 

                The Maintenance Foreman shall be entitled to paid vacation as granted by Ohio laws, and in accordance with Board Policy 4243.

 

Sick Leave and Other Leave

 

                The Maintenance Foreman shall be entitled to such sick leave and other leave as granted by Ohio Laws governing same, and by Board Policies 4151.1-2 and 4151.7.

Duties and Obligations

The Maintenance Foreman

 

The Maintenance Foreman shall:

 

(1)     see to it (including custodial care) that the Ironton City School District’s buildings, grounds, facilities,  and equipment are kept operational and in good order;

 

(2)    lead the way, assist in the work (as necessary), and supervise repairs, changes, replacements, modifications, improvements, and other work tasks needed to keep the
        buildings and equipment functional;

 

(3)     purchase needed items in emergencies or when, in good judgment, these items are essential in order to  facilitate the work as mentioned in No. 1 and 2;

 

(4)     monitor, very closely, the conditions and state of this School District’s buildings, grounds, and  equipment and make recommendations to the City Superintendent
        of  Schools as to needed physical repairs, replacements, and improvements;

 

(5)    serve as advisor to the City Superintendent of Schools on all matters related to the successful  management and maintenance of the physical plants in the Ironton
        City System;

 

(6)     make recommendations to the City Superintendent of Schools with regard to hiring, assigning, and/or firing of all maintenance employees and custodians;

 

(7)     assign work to and supervise the maintenance staff members and custodians during the school-calendar year and do likewise during the summer months when
        seasonal workers are assigned to the group by the City Superintendent of Schools;

 

(8)     determine, on a priority basis, the maintenance jobs to be done; schedule same; and proceed with the work;

 

(9)     set time schedules for the maintenance staff; and have the authority to change and/or adjust time schedules for the maintenance and custodial personnel if severe
         weather conditions or other hazardous conditions dictate an adjustment, in the best interest of the schools, or for the welfare and safety of the workers;

 

(10)   consult with the City Superintendent of Schools on major repair or replacement jobs which are needed in this District, and which would require Board consideration
         and/or action;

  

(11)   assist the City Superintendent of Schools in planning and executing a program of inservice training for the maintenance/custodians in our schools;

 

(12)   seek outside technical assistance, with the approval of the City Superintendent of Schools, of expert(s) in any specialized field or area of repair, construction,
          installation, etc. which demands data, information necessary to get the job done.

 

(13)   serve as advisor to the City Superintendent of Schools with regard to federal and state asbestos regulations.
