Professional Development Committee
A.
A professional development committee shall be formed under the
structure adopted by the Board of
Education. The committee shall determine whether
coursework completed by educators meets the requirements for renewal of
certificates and licenses. The
committee shall also review other continuing education activities in addition
to coursework.
B.
If the collective bargaining agreement does not include a
method for the selection of teacher members
of the committee, the exclusive
representative of the district’s teachers shall select the teacher members and
designate replacement members in case of vacancies among teacher members.
C.
The Board of Education shall determine the structure of the
Professional Development Committee
which shall include the following
elements:
- The
committee shall have a district level scope;
- There
shall be five (5) total members of the Professional Development
Committee. The committee shall
contain three (3) teacher members selected in accordance with paragraph
“B” above;
- The
administrative members shall include a principal and one other
representative which may include the Assistant Superintendent or any other
person appointed by the Superintendent;
- The
committee shall address renewal requirements for classroom teachers,
special teachers and educational service personnel. Coursework for administrative
certificates shall not be evaluated by the committee;
- The
terms of committee members shall be three (3) years. During the first three
(3) years of operation, teacher members shall be appointed for one (1),
two (2), and three (3) years and thereafter each opening shall be filled
for a three (3) year term;
- Administrative
personnel shall serve for three (3) year terms and may be reappointed by
the Superintendent. The
Superintendent shall fill any vacancies created among administrative
members;
- The
Professional Development Committee shall schedule meetings once each month
throughout the year and during non-school hours. Meetings may be canceled if no one has requested coursework
evaluation during the previous thirty (30) days. The committee shall meet at the call of the chairperson or
upon the filing of a petition with the Superintendent signed by two (2)
committee members;
- The
meetings shall be held at the Central Office or as otherwise determined by
the Superintendent;
- Compensation
to be negotiated between the Bargaining Unit’s representative and the
Board of Education.
D.
The initial meeting of the committee, upon election and appointment
of all committee members, shall
be called by a member designated
by the Superintendent. At this initial
meeting, the committee shall select a chairperson and such other officers the
committee deems necessary, and adopt rules for the conduct of its meetings.
