Student Conduct – Code of Regulations
This code of regulations is adopted by the Board of
Education of the Ironton City Schools pursuant to ORC 3313.661.
Any pupil engaging in the
type of conduct specifically or generally like the kind listed herein is
subject to expulsion, suspension, in-school suspension, Alternative School
placement, emergency removal, after school and/or lunch detention, removal from
extracurricular activities and other that the school may devise. This code of regulations applies to all
students while in the custody or control of the school, on school grounds or
closely proximate thereto, while at school-sponsored functions or activities or
on school-owned or provided transportation vehicles.
The types of conduct prohibited
by this code of regulations are as follows:
- Damage or destruction of school property on or
off of school premises.
- Damage or destruction of private property on
school premises or in areas controlled by the school.
- Assault on a school employee, student or other
persons on school premises, while in the custody or control of the school,
or in the course of a school-related activity. Assault may be defined as physical or verbal assault.
- Fighting.
- Abuse of another. No student shall use or direct to or about a school employee
or student, words, phrases, or actions that are considered to be
slanderous or degrading in nature, and/or words or phrases that are
obscene or profane as defined by the majority of our society. Name-calling and negative, uncomplimentary
and offensive remarks related to physical handicaps or defects, mental
handicaps, race, religion, nationality, appearance or other reasons are
prohibited.
- Disregard of reasonable directions or commands by
school authorities including school administrators, teachers and other
authorized school personnel.
- Disruption or interference with school
activities.
- Chronic misbehavior that causes disruption or
interference with school activities.
- Presence in areas during school hours or outside
school hours where a student has no legitimate business without permission
of the proper school authorities.
- Leaving school during hours without permission of
the proper school authority.
- Distribution of pamphlets, leaflets, buttons,
insignia, etc., without the permission of the proper school authorities.
- Demonstrations by individuals or groups causing
disruption to the school program.
- Disrespect to a teacher or other school
authority.
- Refusing to take detention or other properly
administered discipline. Skipping
detention.
- Falsifying information given to school
authorities in the legitimate pursuit of their jobs.
- Possession or use of dangerous weapons or
ordnance or objects that look like weapons or ordnance including, but not
limited to, guns, firearms, ammunition, knives, grenades, sling shots,
bows, arrows, machetes, brass knuckles, chains, studs, etc., or possession
or use of objects that may render physical harm to another if improperly
used including, but not limited to, axes, hatchets, hammers, saws, ice
picks, screwdrivers, knives, etc.
- Buying, selling, transferring, using, or
possessing any substance containing tobacco including, but not limited to,
cigarettes, cigars, pipes, clove cigarettes, chewing tobacco, snuff, dip,
or tobacco in any other form.
- Buying, selling, transferring, using, possessing
or being under the influence of any controlled substance (drugs,
narcotics, marijuana, etc.) or inhalants.
Buying, selling, using, possessing or being under the influence of
any counterfeit controlled substance.
(Any substance that is made to look like a controlled substance, or
is represented to be a controlled substance, or that is believed to be a
controlled substance.)
- Buying, selling, transferring, using, possessing
or being under the influence of any drug, medication, inhalant or other
controlled substance which can be taken internally where the student or
students involved cannot show a legitimate health or other reason for the
use of such substances.
- Buying, selling, transferring, using, or
possessing any drug or alcoholic paraphernalia to include instruments,
objects, papers, containers, etc.
- Buying, selling, transferring, using, possessing
or being under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or intoxicant of
any kind.
- Students shall not be permitted to possess
beepers or pagers.
- Turning in false fire, tornado, bomb, disaster or
other alarms.
- Placing of signs and slogans on school property
without the permission of the proper school authorities.
- Extortion or threatening of a student or school
personnel.
- Forgery of school-related documents.
- Cursing.
- Truancy.
- Cheating or plagiarizing.
- Hazing (to persecute, harass or humiliate another
student and/or employee).
- Fraternizing (no public display of affection).
- Harassment of school personnel by any registered
student at anytime in school or out, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a
week.
- Gambling.
- Tardiness.
- Publication or possession of obscene,
pornographic or libelous material.
- Use of indecent or obscene language and/or
gestures in any form.
- Indecent exposure.
- Arson or other improper use of fire.
- Possession of matches, lighters or other similar
devises.
- Failure to abide by reasonable dress and
appearance codes set forth in the student handbooks or established by the
school administration or Board of Education. This includes the prohibition of all clothing, jewelry,
signs, etc. which at the discretion of the school administration is
reasonably related to or represents gang or gang-like activity. Improper or suggestive dress or
violation of Board Policy 5115.
- Disobedience of driving regulations. Driving, riding or loitering in
automobiles during the school day without permission.
- Willfully aiding another person to violate school
regulations.
- Disruption of school assemblies.
- Theft or possession of stolen goods.
- Commission of any crime on school premises or at
a school activity in violation of the Ohio Criminal Code, Ohio Traffic
Code or the Ohio Juvenile Code.
- Engaging in any activity at school or a school
related function that disrupts the educational process, is restricted in
board policy or the school handbook, or poses a clear and present danger
to the other students or staff.
Although
school authorities will respect the rights of students in their locker and
property, it should be made clear to all that lockers are the property of
the school. A reasonable search of
lockers may be conducted to repossess school property. A search in the absence of student
notification may be made in cases where a suspected item(s) poses a clear and
present danger to health and safety. A
locker may be searched if there is reasonable suspicion to believe that a crime
has been or is about to be committed or a school rule has been broken. If notice is properly posted, a principal
may conduct a random locker search. Items, which may be used to disrupt or
interfere with the educational process, may be removed from student
possession. Students shall not use
their lockers or property in such a way as to interfere with school discipline
or normal operation of the school. This
includes the unauthorized possession or storage of other’s property.
Students should not use their lockers or
property to endanger the health and safety of other persons.
