Elementary Promotion Practice

Achievement of all elementary students should be monitored on a continuous basis in order to provide the best possible educational experience for each student.  Recognizing the importance of the mastery of basic skills in the primary grades, and the subsequent development of advanced skills in grades four-six, the following guidelines shall be followed in the promotion or retention of students in grades K-6.

Students who successfully acquire the skills at each grade level shall be promoted to the next grade level.

It is recognized that students who do not successfully acquire the skills necessary to function at the next grade level generally establish patterns of not acquiring the skills well before the end of the school year.   These achievement patterns should be identified early in an effort to provide appropriate assistance to the student.

When a student is determined to be at-risk, effective early intervention strategies shall be considered in order to allow the opportunity for the student to be academically successful.

When achievement patterns are identified that the student is not acquiring the necessary skills to function at the next grade level, a conference will be requested with the parent(s) to discuss the student’s achievement and possible actions that the school and home can take to assist the student.  In addition the student may be considered for psychological testing

If the student continues to perform at a level that will not allow him/her to function at the next grade level, the parents shall be notified that their child is a candidate for retention.  The final decision for retention rests with the principal.
