Administration Rules and Regulations for Policy 5125
Guidelines
1. The numerical grading does not apply to kindergarten through third grade. The present grading system of using letters to indicate student progress will be continued in K-3.
2. All first grade teachers will have the discretion of giving letters grades (A, B, C, D, F) or
(O, S, U, I, NI) in conduct, effort, reading, spelling, and mathematics. All other areas will be graded
with O, S, U, I, or NI.
Each teacher who elects to issue grades of O, S, U, I, NI in reading, spelling, and mathematics shall
convert those grades to A, B, C, D, or F when the students transfer to another class or school. The
grades shall also be converted when students are promoted or assigned to the second grade.
3. The second grade will give letter grades ( A, B, C, D, F) in conduct, effort, reading, language, spelling,
and mathematics. All other areas will be graded with O, S, U, I, or NI.
4. The third grade will give letters grades (A, B, C, D, F) in conduct, effort, reading, language, spelling,
mathematics, and social studies. All other areas will be graded with O, S, U, I, or NI.
5. Elementary grades 4, 5, and 6 will give numeric grades in all academic subjects. Art, music, and
physical education will be graded S or U in grades 4 and 5, with art and physical education being graded in this manner at grade 6.
6. The Ironton Junior and Senior High Schools will give numerical grades in all subjects, including art,
music, and physical education; and all subject final grades on the permanent record cards will be counted toward students’ overall averages for class-rank.
7. The nine-week grade or final grade will be recorded as a whole number. Raise fractions of .5 or over to the next highest number; and drop all fractions of less than .5.
8. When scores are averaged for a nine-week grade or final grade, actual scores should be used. (For example, do not change of 25 to a 64 before averaging.)
9. Any student who transfers into the Ironton City Schools and who has been given letter grades would receive the closest numerical grade to our schools’ middle number.
