Board
Policy 5127.2
In order to
strengthen the overall educational program at Ironton High School, and in its
quest for academic excellence, the Ironton City Board of Education adopts the
following policy requirements:
1.
Twenty
units of credit shall be required for graduation, effective with the Ironton
High School Class of 1986 and eighteen units of credit shall be required for
two year Vocational Students.
a.
A
diploma will be granted by the Board to anyone who successfully completes the
minimum requirements set by the Board, or the individualized education program
developed for the person pursuant to Section 3323.08 of the Revised Code, and
who has attained the score designated by the State Board of Education
indicating ninth grade proficiency in the areas tested, or is excused from
taking such test by virtue of a handicapping condition. An honors diploma will be granted to anyone
who successfully completes the minimum curriculum or the individualized
education program developed for the
person pursuant to Section 3323.08 O.R.C., and who attained the
designated score indicating ninth grade proficiency in the required skills and
meeting the additional requirements established by the State Board of Education
and the Ironton Board of Education.
2.
To
be awarded a diploma with honors, the student shall be required to meet at
least all but one of the criteria listed in this paragraph for either the
college preparatory or the vocational education curriculum. A student shall not be required to meet more
than the specified number of criteria, nor shall any student be required to
meet any one specified criterion.
a.
The
student who completes the college preparatory curriculum in the high school
shall meet at least seven of the following eight criteria:

Earn
four units of English;
·
Earn
three units of mathematics which shall include at least the competencies
obtained in Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry;
·
Earn
three units of science including at least one unit in a foundational science
with an emphasis in Chemistry and at least one unit in an applied science with
an emphasis in Biology;
·
Earn
three units of Social Studies;
·
Earn
either three units of one foreign language or two units each of two foreign
languages;
·
Earn
one unit of Fine Arts;
·
Maintain
an overall high school grade point average of at least 3.5 on a four‑point
scale up to the last grading period of the senior year;
·
Obtain
a passing score(s) on the Twelfth Grade Proficiency Tests designated by the
State Board of Education or obtain a composite score of twenty‑seven on
the American College Testing Program's (ACT) Tests or an equivalent composite
score on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).
b.
The student who completes
at least two years of an intensive vocational or technical education curriculum
in the high school shall meet at least seven of the following eight criteria:
· Earn four units of English which may include one unit of
applied communication;
· Earn two units of mathematics which will include algebra,
geometry, or the equivalent in applied mathematics;
· Earn two units of science, at least one of which will be
an applied science with an emphasis in biology;
· Earn three units of social studies;
· Earn either two units of a foreign language or two units
of computer science;
· Maintain an overall high school grade point average of at
least 3.5 on a four‑point scale up to the last grading period of the
senior year;
· Complete a career passport, including the demonstration
of proficiency in ninety‑five percent of the occupational core
competencies as judged by at least two content experts;
· Obtain the score(s) on the Twelfth Grade Proficiency
Tests designated by the State Board of Education or obtain a composite score
of twenty‑seven on the American
College Testing Program's (ACT) Tests or an equivalent composite score on the
Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).
3.
Units of credit will be
awarded in accordance with the Program of Studies Manual.
4.
Every student, except two
year vocational students, will be required to take a core of thirteen (l3)
units of credit made up of the following for graduation:
English Four (4) units of
credit
Social
Studies Three (3) units of
credit
*Mathematics Two (2) or three (3) units
*Science Two (2) or three (3)
units
Health/Phys.
Ed. One (l) unit of credit
* Must take three of either
5.
The following core courses
are required of vocational students, including O.W.E. students for graduation:
English Three (3) units
Social
Studies Two (2) units
Mathematics Two (2) units
Science Two (2) units
Health/Phys.
Ed. One (1) unit
6.
Credits for courses earned
by tutoring and/or correspondence shall be allowed only as per the requirements
listed in the Program of Studies Manual issued by the School District.
7.
Any student receiving
special education under Chapter 3323 of the Revised Code shall be excused from
taking any proficiency test if the IEP excuses the student from taking the
test. In the case of a student so
excused from taking the test, the Board will not prohibit him from taking the
test.
8.
The Board may, for medical
reasons or other good cause, excuse a student from taking a proficiency test on
the date scheduled, but any such test shall be administered to the excused
student no later than fifteen days following the scheduled date.
