BOARD POLICY  5138

Pregnancy- Students

The laws of the State of Ohio do not prohibit the school attendance of girls undergoing normal pregnancy.  Regular school attendance and participation in classroom activities by pregnant students therefore is permitted, in accordance and in compliance with the law, in the Ironton City School System.

For the welfare of the pregnant student and in the best interest of the school, the school health nurse shall monitor each known case of student pregnancy, if the student is enrolled in and attending school.  The nurse shall, based upon her findings and after consultation with the girl’s physician, apprise the school principal of existing conditions.  The nurse shall also make such recommendations as are prudent and necessary on each pregnancy case for the principal’s disposition and/or action, if the latter becomes necessary.

Normal Pregnancy

1.        The customary amount of time allotted for excused absence from school due to normal pregnancy and

delivery is six to eight weeks.  During this time the student may make arrangements with the guidance counselors and classroom teachers to complete classroom assignments.

2.    If the student is to be absent for an extended period of time, partial attendance may be worked out on

an individual basis with the guidance counselors.

3.        If the student fails to attend school or does not complete assignments according to terms agreed upon,

she must make up the time at a later date in order to meet academic or graduation requirements.  Examples: summer school, private tutoring.

Pregnancy With Complications

1.        Upon presentation of a doctor’s statement explaining the nature of the complications, the student may make arrangements with the guidance counselors for partial attendance and/or classroom assignments.

2.        Home instruction may be granted if the absence due to complications is to exceed six (6) weeks, but only after all other possibilities have been explored.

3.        Each student’s situation will be reviewed and approved by the school health nurse and the school principal on an individual case basis.
