BOARD POLICY  5141.2

Kindergarten/First Grade Student Health Screening

1.        Before November 1 of the school year in which a child is enrolled for kindergarten or first grade for the first time, the child will be screened in the following areas:

  1. hearing;
  2. vision;
  3. speech and communications;
  4. health and medical problems (health history); and
  5. developmental disorders.

2.        This screening will meet the existing conditions of the Department of Health Standards.

3.        The Ironton City Board of Education will provide the health screening itself through the use of  school personnel including:

  1. speech therapist;
  2. guidance counselor;
  3. school nurse;
  4. part time aides;
  5. kindergarten teacher; and
  6. elementary principal.

4.        The objectives of the student health screening include:

  1. helping improve education and educational placement by identifying those pupils with possible  special learning needs;

  1. identifying children who may benefit from early intervention services; and

  1. identifying health conditions (e.g. vision or hearing conditions) that may require treatment.

5.        Parents will be notified of the results of their child’s screening.

6.        If the screening reveals the possibility of special learning needs that may be served by a special education program, the district shall conduct further assessment in accordance with its current procedures.

7.        This policy provides for health screening only and is not intended to provide for a comprehensive medical examination and diagnosis.  This does not in any way imply that the parents should not, at their own expense, obtain a thorough medical examination for their child.

8.        Prior to the first day of August of the school year in which a pupil is required to be screened under this policy, the Board will provide parents with information about the Ironton School District’s screening program.
