BOARD POLICY 5217
The Clara Ruth Maddox Nursing Scholarship
Introduction
The late Clara Ruth Maddox was a graduate of Ironton High School with the Class of 1924. Mrs. Maddox was employed, later at an area hospital, working in the laboratory there for many years.
At her demise, Mrs. Maddox left a Last Will and Testament, a part of which stipulated that a nursing scholarship be set up for a needy, deserving graduate of Ironton High School in her name. Funding for the scholarship was to come from the interest on two (2) certificates of deposit held by an area financial institution.
It shall be the Policy of the Ironton City Board of Education to follow the provisions of the Last Will and Testament of the late Clara Ruth Maddox with regard to the establishment of the Clara Ruth Maddox Nursing Scholarship which is to be awarded annually to needy and deserving graduates of Ironton High School.
The major provisions of the Last Will and Testament (with reference to the nursing scholarship) were as follows:
1. To award the interest on said funds (interest from certificates of deposit) each year to a needing and
2. deserving graduate of Ironton High School who desires to obtain further education in the field of nursing, if in the opinion of the Trustees, it is a student who desires and qualifies in any particular year.
3. The interest will be added to the principal and the Trustees (the Ironton Board of Education)
will meet yearly in order to award the scholarship.
4. This scholarship will be known as the Clara Ruth Maddox Nursing Scholarship.
5. The Trustees will have the authority to continue to award the scholarship to the same person for as
long as four (4) years, if in the judgement of Trustees, this would advance the purpose of the Trust
more than one (1) scholarship to different people.
