BOARD POLICY  5220

The Use or Possession of Tobacco By Pupils in Schools

Health Professionals at the highest level of our government have determined that the use of tobacco products can be detrimental to one’s health.  Since the Ironton City Board of Education wishes to encourage good health habits and practices among its students of this district, the Board initiates and establishes this policy.

Also, Ohio Senate Bill 399 enacts R.C. 3313.751, and prohibits, in broad terms, the use and/or possession of tobacco of pupils in any area under the control of the school district or any activity supervised by any school in this district.  This also includes all of Ironton’s school sponsored extracurricular activities.

Therefore, the Ironton City Board of Education, recognizing (1) the health hazards associated with the use of tobacco, and (2) the Ohio law pertaining to the matter,  presents and adopted the following resolution:

“Effective as of the date of the passage of this Resolution and Policy, the Ironton City Board of Education prohibits smoking and/or the use of tobacco in any form or manner by any Ironton student in any area under the jurisdiction and/or control of the school district during the school day, or at any activity supervised by any school within the Ironton District.  This prohibition shall also include the use of tobacco in or on any and all school conveyances.”

A copy of this Policy shall be posted in a prominent place (such the school bulletin board) in each school and/or building owned or controlled by this district.

A copy of both the Policy and Administrative Rules and Regulations shall be included in the Junior and Senior High Schools’ Handbooks.
