The Hollis A. Grimsley Scholarship Award

Introduction

Hollis A. Grimsley was the daughter of a physician, a native of Indiana, and a graduate of Indiana Univerisity.  She taught elementary school in Indiana before moving to Ironton with her husband in 1922.  They reared two children who graduated from Ironton High School. One is an electrical engineer, the other is a teacher.  They have established this scholarship in her memory.

Althougth Mrs. Grimsley chose to remain at home with her children during their formative years, her love of and passion for teaching and working with children did not wane.  She encouraged her children and others to set high standards of achievement.  Her aim was to stimulate students to select attainable goals and then work diligently with their teachers’ guidance and parents’ support.  She tutored neighborhood children without charge.

Mrs. Grimsley stressed the usefulness of mathematics and the importance of good citizenship in the lives of all individuals regardless of their occupations.  She loved her country and believed that students should have a good background knowledge of the history and geography of their country, should be able to locate all fifty states on a map, and should be exemplary citizens.

This scholarship is a symbol of Mrs. Grimsley’s devotion to education of youth throughout her  91 years and her concern that they be educated and responsible citizens of the United States.
