BOARD POLICY  6002

Instructional and Library Materials and Equipment

The Ironton City School Board of Education hereby makes it a Policy to supply and provide (within budgetary limitations) such instructional materials and equipment as are appropriate and necessary for an exemplary educational program in the Ironton City Schools.

Textbooks and supplementary materials will be chosen by committees appointed by the City Superintendent of Schools, with the recommendation of supervisors, principals, and department teachers in the field or areas of study for the books or materials being chosen.  Committees will make choices and send recommendations to the Superintendent and he/she to the Ironton City Board of Education for consideration and possible approval.

Teachers shall have the right to make requests for educational supplies and equipment by requisition.  Said requisitions must be approved by the teacher’s principal who will forward the requisition form to the Superintendent for approval and eventual purchase.

Materials and equipment purchased shall be that which supports the attainment of objectives specified in the course of study.  Staff involvement is essential in the selection process.

The library selections shall be made largely by the librarians, but with suggestions and input from the teachers, supervisors, administrators, and the students being served.  Library books and materials shall be requisitioned in the same manner as textbooks and other educational supplies.  The libraries and library materials and equipment will be that which supports the attainment of objectives specified in the courses of study, and appropriate as to ages, interests, and needs of students served.

The library selections shall be inventoried and cataloged according to a recognized system.  Librarians shall be properly trained for the position.

The Board of Education will budget and provide funding for library materials and equipment as prescribed by the State.  The library itself shall be adequate to meet student needs, with sufficient volumes, reference materials, and other.
