Holiday and Observances
The Ironton City Board of Education, given authority to do so by Section 3313.63 of the Ohio Revised Code, hereby authorizes that the public schools in the Ironton City District may be dismissed on the following legal holidays (if such fall on a school day): Labor Day, the first Monday in September; Veteran’s Day, November 11, Thanksgiving Day, the fourth Thursday in November; Christmas Day, December 25; New Year’s Day, January 1; Washington’s Birthday, February 22; Memorial Day, last Monday in May; and the Fourth of July; or any other day set apart by proclamation of the President of the United States or the governor of Ohio as a day of fast, thanksgiving, or mourning. This Board encourages all of the schools in advance of same, and in manner befitting the traditions and ideals as embraced in these holidays.

Holidays and Observations
1. The principal of each of the schools in this District shall take the initiative within his/her school in
seeing to it that all days established by this Board as legal holidays are observed in the proper manner.
2. Programs, assemblies, and the like are encouraged in the observance of these holidays in order that the
children under our control may generally be exposed to the teaching as represented by these holidays,
and apprised of the meanings of same.
3. Wherein special assemblies are not possible or practicable in the observance of these holidays, the
classroom teacher shall have his/her class do proper honors to these holidays in homeroom activities;
writing papers on the theme of the day observed; making art works appertaining to the occasion; and/or
any other method of instilling within his/her students, the great American traditions and ideals as
exemplified by these holidays.
4. “Constitution Week” and other worthwhile observances shall also be acknowledged within our schools
and shall be characterized by classroom teaching and projects, giving proper emphasis to these
important aspects of our American life and heritage.
5. Reference should be made to the Board Policy on the Memorial Day Parade. Said Policy is found
eslewhere in this Policy Book.
